Pressure treated, cedar or composite. Footings go below the local frost depth, ledger flashing keeps water out of the rim joist, and guards and stair rise are built to the Ontario Building Code.
Privacy, picket and gate work. Post depth is what decides whether a fence stays straight through an Ottawa spring, so we dig properly and set posts rather than shortcut the depth.
Exterior doors, interior doors, patio and garden doors. Old openings are rarely square, so we shim, plumb the hinge jamb, and set the sweep and threshold to stop winter draughts.
Replacement windows in existing openings, plus new openings when we are already framing. We insulate and air seal the perimeter, then finish the interior trim and exterior capping.
Baseboard, casing, crown, wainscoting, stair parts and closet build outs. Mitres tight, nail holes filled, caulk lines clean, and the trim scribed to floors that have settled over fifty years.
Frost is the first thing we design around. Ground here freezes deep, and anything sitting above that depth lifts.
So deck footings go down below the local frost line, not just past the topsoil. Posts get saddles rather than sitting in concrete where water can collect. Stringers and beams get sized for the span, and the ledger gets flashed where it meets the house.
Fences work the same way. A fence with shallow posts looks fine in September and leans by May. Along the older streets around Riverside Park we also watch for clay soil, which holds water and moves more than sand.
Decks above a certain height off grade need a building permit, and so does anything attached to the house that carries load. Inspectors check footing depth, guard height and stair geometry.
We handle the permit application and meet the inspector on site. If you would rather keep the deck low and permit free, we will tell you where that line sits before you commit to a design.
Walls in a 1955 Merivale bungalow are not straight. Neither are the floors. A cabinet run installed as if they were leaves gaps at the wall and doors that sit proud at one end.
We measure the room, find the high point of the floor, and set the run off that. Fillers get scribed. Toe kicks get shimmed level. Uppers get anchored into studs, not just drywall anchors, because a loaded cabinet is heavy.
Trim work in downtown Ottawa century homes needs a different approach again. Original casing profiles are often no longer stocked, so we either mill to match or work with a profile that reads correctly next to the original.
Carpentry is usually one stage of a bigger job. If you are planning a remodel, our carpenters frame the changes, then hand off to dry wall, paint and flooring under the same contract.
On kitchen renovations the carpentry is the visible part of the job, so cabinet and trim work gets scheduled once plumbing and electrical rough-ins have passed inspection.
Exterior carpentry runs best from late April to early November. We can frame in the cold, but concrete footings and staining both have temperature limits.
Interior carpentry runs all year. Winter is actually our steadiest season for cabinets, trim and interior doors, and booking then usually means a faster start date than asking for a deck in June.

You approve species, hardware and finish. We order, and apply for a permit where the work calls for one.
Cut and fit on site, with the work area kept tidy and tools cleared at the end of each day.

Below the local frost depth, which is considerably deeper here than in southern Ontario. Shallow footings lift when the ground freezes and drop again in spring, which is what pulls a deck away from the house.
Yes. We install stock, semi custom and custom cabinets from any supplier. Send us the plan and cabinet list and we will quote the install, including fillers, panels and hardware alignment.
Often, yes. Some older Ottawa profiles are still stocked, and where they are not we can have the profile milled or select a close match. We bring samples and hold them against your existing casing before ordering.
Late April through early November, since concrete and stain both need temperatures above freezing. Booking in winter for a spring build usually gets you an earlier start date than calling in June.
Yes, one opening at a time so the house is never left open. We prep the new unit first, then swap and air seal the same day. Deep cold snaps get rescheduled for the comfort of everyone in the house.
