What proper interior prep involves
We start by moving and covering furniture, masking floors and taping off anything that is not being painted.
Then the repairs. Nail pops get filled, old brush ridges get sanded flat, and water stains get sealed with a stain blocking primer so they do not bleed back through the finish coat. Glossy trim gets scuffed or de-glossed, because paint will not hold on a slick surface.
Kitchens and bathrooms get a coating built for moisture. Ottawa homes swing from humid July air to very dry furnace air in January, and a flat builder paint in a bathroom will not survive that cycle.
Colour and sheen choices for Ottawa light
From November to February this city gets short grey afternoons. Cool greys that look crisp in a showroom often read cold and flat in a north facing Ottawa living room.
We are painters, not designers, and we will say so. What we do is bring samples, brush large test patches on your actual wall, and look at them with you in morning and evening light before you commit to twelve gallons.
On sheen, we usually put a washable finish in hallways, kids rooms and stairwells, and keep flatter finishes for ceilings and low traffic rooms. Washable matters more than most people expect once boots and backpacks are involved.
Painting over popcorn and textured ceilings
Textured ceilings take paint well with a thick nap roller, though they cannot be washed afterwards. That is usually fine for a bedroom and a problem in a kitchen.
If the texture is failing or you want it gone, that becomes a drywall repair job with a skim coat before painting. In homes built before 1980 the texture may contain asbestos, so it gets tested rather than sanded.
