We have painted houses here since 1999. Brick semis in Centretown, aluminum and vinyl siding in Nepean, stucco in Orleans, and the wide stretch of 1960s bungalows around Riverside Park. Each surface behaves differently once the temperature swings.
Ottawa is hard on paint. Winter drops past minus 25, summer runs humid and above 30, and the freeze and thaw cycle in between lifts anything that was applied over a dirty or damp surface. So we wash, scrape, fill, prime, and only then paint.

Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, stairwells, and basements. We mask and cover the room before a brush comes out, patch what the last owner left behind, and cut lines by hand. Two coats as standard, more when a strong colour is going over white.
Siding, brick, stucco, soffit, fascia, porches, decks, and garage doors. We pressure wash, scrape back to sound material, spot prime bare wood, and use coatings rated for cold. Work stops when overnight temperatures fall below the product minimum.
Any crew can roll a wall. The difference shows up in year three.
On interiors we fill nail pops, sand old brush marks flat, and seal water stains so they do not bleed through. Glossy trim gets scuffed or de-glossed first. Bathrooms and kitchens get a coating built for moisture, because Ottawa homes run humid in July and dry in January.
On exteriors we wash off the chalking and pollen, scrape loose film, and prime every bare spot. Caulking around windows and door casings gets replaced when it has hardened. That joint is where water gets in, and water is what pops paint off siding after a hard winter.
Most failures we get called to fix are not product failures. They are timing failures. Paint applied in late October cures slowly, then gets hit by frost before it has hardened. It looks fine in November and peels by April.
We book exterior work between late May and early October, and we watch the overnight lows at the end of the season rather than the daytime highs.
Housing age changes the job. In Centretown and Sandy Hill we work on plaster walls and original wood trim, so we test for adhesion and keep sanding controlled. Homes built before 1980 may contain lead paint, so surfaces get treated carefully rather than dry sanded across a room.
West of the canal, the 1970s to 1990s stock through Nepean and along Merivale is mostly drywall with painted or stained trim. Those go faster, though popcorn ceilings and old oil-based trim still need the right primer.
Newer builds in Kanata and Orleans often arrive with builder-grade flat paint on every wall. It marks easily. When we repaint those, we usually move to a washable finish in hallways and kids' rooms.
Most of our painting happens at the end of a bigger job. When we are already in the house as a general contractor, painting gets sequenced after the dry wall is finished and before the flooring goes down.
That order matters. Paint before flooring means no cut lines along a brand new baseboard, and no drop sheets over fresh hardwood. If you are planning a kitchen renovation or a bathroom renovation, tell us early and we will build the paint stage into the schedule.
Ottawa gets short, grey afternoons from November through February. Cool greys that look sharp in a showroom can read flat and cold in a north-facing Ottawa living room in January.
We are not designers, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can do is bring samples, paint large test patches on your actual walls, and look at them with you in morning and evening light before you commit to twelve gallons.

Most exterior coatings need surface and air temperatures above roughly 10 degrees, including overnight. In Ottawa that usually means late May through early October. We would rather push your exterior to spring than apply paint that frost will lift.
Price follows square footage, ceiling height, trim count, and how much patching the walls need. A three bedroom main floor is a different job in a 1960s Riverside Park bungalow than in a new Kanata build. We quote by room after seeing the surfaces, never over the phone.
No. We work room by room, seal the work area, and clean up at the end of each day. Most Ottawa homeowners stay in the house for interior painting and only shuffle a few rooms around.
Usually yes. Textured ceilings from that era take paint well with a thick nap roller, though they cannot be washed afterward. If the texture is failing or you want it gone, removal and a skim coat is a dry wall job we can quote at the same time.
