Property lines, locates and neighbours
We recommend confirming the property line from your survey before building, not from where the old fence sat. Old fences move, and rebuilding on an inherited mistake makes it yours.
Utility locates get called before we dig, every time. Gas, hydro, cable and irrigation lines all live at post depth in Ottawa yards.

Building a fence that stays straight
Posts are the whole structure. We set them below the frost line, backfill properly, and keep water from collecting at the base.
On slopes we either step the fence or rack it to follow grade, and we say which before building because they look very different when finished.
Gates get built with proper bracing and heavy hinges. A sagging gate is the first thing to fail on a cheap fence, and it is the part you touch every day.
City of Ottawa fence rules
Ottawa regulates fence height, and the limits differ between front yards and rear yards. Corner lots have sight line rules for traffic safety, and pool enclosures have their own requirements.
