What happens around the frame
Once the old unit is out we check the rough opening for rot and squareness, and repair what needs repairing before the new window goes in.
The new unit gets shimmed, fastened without racking the frame, then insulated with low expansion foam or backer rod and sealant. High expansion foam can bow a frame enough to stop a casement closing properly.
Outside, the opening gets capped and sealed so water is directed away. Inside, the trim goes on last. Both matter, and a quote that only mentions the window itself is not covering the whole job.
Condensation, noise and what new windows actually fix
Condensation on the inside of a window in January is usually a humidity issue, not a window fault. New windows help, but a bathroom fan venting into the attic will keep the house humid regardless.
For noise, the honest answer is that new windows reduce it noticeably but do not remove it. Homes near the airport approach in the south end or on a busy arterial like Innes Road hear a real difference, not silence.
Basement egress windows are a different job again, involving cutting the foundation and building a window well. That is covered under our basement renovation work.
Window walls and unusual sizes
The original Beaverbrook and Katimavik homes in Kanata have distinctive window walls that are not stock sizes, and lead times on custom units are longer.
We measure carefully, plan structural support at the opening, and order early. Rushing a custom order in Ottawa in September rarely ends with glass installed before the cold arrives.
What a window installation quote includes
- Unit spec: frame material, glazing package and operation type.
- Opening repair: any rot or framing correction found on removal.
- Air sealing: insulation and sealant method at the perimeter.
- Exterior capping: how the outside is finished and shed water.
- Interior trim: casing, sill and paint readiness.
- Disposal: old units removed and taken away.
Where window installation sits in the bigger job
This work is part of our carpenter service, so it can run on its own or as one stage inside a larger project. When it is part of a bigger renovation we sequence it with the other trades rather than treating it as a standalone visit.
Clients booking this often pair it with cabinet installation, deck building, fence installation or door installation. One contract covers whichever combination you need, with a single schedule and one point of contact.
Window Installation across the Ottawa area
We take this work on throughout the greater Ottawa area. Recent jobs have run through Nepean, Merivale, South Keys, Kanata and the surrounding neighbourhoods. The consultation is free wherever you are in the city.
