Substrate, movement and cracked grout
Wood framed floors flex, and Ottawa homes swing between humid summers and very dry winters, which makes them flex more.
Tile bonded straight to a flexing subfloor cracks at the grout lines first, then at the tile. An uncoupling membrane lets the substrate move slightly without transferring that stress into the tile, which is why we specify one on most wood framed floors.
We also check deflection and add a plywood layer where the subfloor is too springy for tile. Large format tile is less forgiving than small tile, so flatness matters more as tile size goes up.
Wet areas and waterproofing
Bathrooms above living space are the ones where doing it properly matters most, because a slow leak damages a ceiling before anyone notices.
Shower floors and walls get a waterproofing system, not just moisture resistant board, and we build the slope to the drain rather than relying on the tile to make up the difference.

Electric heating mats go under the tile and are the single upgrade clients mention most in January, particularly in entries and bathrooms.
The mat is installed before tiling and the thermostat wiring is completed by a licensed electrician. It has to be planned before the floor goes down, since retrofitting means lifting the tile.
