Why it suits Ottawa basements
Concrete slabs release moisture and stay cold, which is exactly what wood dislikes. Vinyl plank tolerates both.
Before installing we test slab moisture and flatten the surface, because vinyl plank telegraphs bumps and dips more than people expect. Then we lay a subfloor panel or underlay so the floor is not sitting directly on cold concrete, which makes an enormous difference to how the room feels in February.

Click, glue down and where each works
Click systems float over the subfloor and are the usual choice in basements and rentals, because a damaged plank can be lifted and replaced.
Glue down is more stable underfoot and better suited to large open areas, commercial spaces and rooms with heavy rolling loads. It is also less forgiving of an uneven subfloor.
Either way, expansion gaps at the perimeter are not optional. Skipping them is why a floating floor buckles at a doorway two summers later.
Rentals and turnover work
Landlords along the Merivale corridor and around South Keys use vinyl plank almost exclusively now, and for good reason. It survives tenancies, individual planks can be replaced, and it does not stain the way carpet does.
