Why laminate buckles and how we prevent it
A floating floor expands in humid weather and contracts in dry weather. If it is pinned at a wall, a doorway or a heavy piece of furniture, that movement has nowhere to go and the joints lift.
So we leave an expansion gap around the entire perimeter, including at door casings, which we undercut so the floor can slide beneath rather than butt against.
We also keep runs within the manufacturer maximum length without a transition. Long open plans sometimes need a transition strip, and we say so upfront rather than gambling.
Where laminate makes sense and where it does not
Laminate suits bedrooms, hallways, rec rooms and rentals. It is hard wearing, cost effective and quick to install.
It does not suit bathrooms, laundry rooms or basements with any moisture history, because the core swells irreversibly once water gets into a seam. For those rooms we recommend vinyl plank or tile instead, and we will say so even though it is a smaller job for us.
For basements generally, slab moisture gets tested first regardless of the product chosen.
Underlay is not all the same
Underlay does three jobs: it evens out minor subfloor variation, it reduces sound transfer, and in some cases it provides a moisture barrier.
On upper floors and in townhouses with shared walls, sound rating matters more than people expect. We name the underlay in the quote so you know what you are getting.
What a laminate quote includes
- Subfloor prep: screwing, patching and levelling as needed.
- Product spec: thickness, AC wear rating and locking system.
- Underlay: type, thickness and whether a vapour barrier is included.
- Expansion allowance: perimeter gap and door casing undercuts.
- Transitions: thresholds, reducers and stair nosings.
- Waste allowance: square footage plus cutting waste, stated honestly.
