What each coat is actually doing
The tape coat bonds the joint and is the one that determines whether a seam will crack later. It gets bedded properly, not floated over.
The second coat widens and fills, and the third feathers the edges out so the transition from compound to board is invisible. Butt joints get the widest feather because they have no recess to hide in.
Between coats everything dries. In an Ottawa January the dry furnace air speeds that up, in a humid July it slows it down, and we schedule around the difference rather than pretending it does not exist.
Finish levels and where they matter
A standard finish is right for most walls in most rooms. Where a wall gets strong side light from a window, or where you are using a satin or gloss paint, imperfections show far more and the wall needs an extra coat and more careful sanding.
Long hallways and stairwells are the usual problem areas in Ottawa homes, because light runs down the length of the wall rather than across it. We flag those rooms when we quote so the extra work is priced in from the start.
Before we call a room finished we walk it with a light held flat against the wall, with you there. Anything that shows gets another pass.
Dust control while finishing
Sanding compound produces a fine dust that will travel the whole house on the furnace fan if nobody stops it.
We seal the work zone with poly and zip doors, tape off return air vents, use dust collecting sanders on larger jobs, and vacuum rather than sweep. Sweeping just puts it all back in the air.
What a drywall finishing quote from us includes
- Number of coats: stated per room, not left to interpretation.
- Finish level: where extra flatness is being paid for and why.
- Corner bead: type and any bullnose detail.
- Drying time: built into the schedule rather than squeezed out.
- Dust protection: barriers, vent sealing and vacuum cleanup.
- Paint readiness: whether priming is in our scope or the painter's.
Where drywall finishing sits in the bigger job
This work is part of our dry wall contractor service, so it can run on its own or as one stage inside a larger project. When it is part of a bigger renovation we sequence it with the other trades rather than treating it as a standalone visit.
Clients booking this often pair it with drywall installation or drywall repair. One contract covers whichever combination you need, with a single schedule and one point of contact.
Drywall Finishing across the Ottawa area
We take this work on throughout the greater Ottawa area. Recent jobs have run through Nepean, Merivale, South Keys, Kanata and the surrounding neighbourhoods. The consultation is free wherever you are in the city.
