Why drywall cracks in Ottawa houses
Indoor humidity here swings hard. Summer air is humid, and once the furnace runs in January the house dries out badly.
Framing moves with that swing and drywall telegraphs the movement. Cracks show up in the same places every time: the corners of door and window openings, along ceiling perimeters, and above stairwells where framing spans are longest.
Fixing one means cutting out the failed tape, re-taping with the right compound, and feathering wide. Smearing filler into a moving joint buys you a season at best.

Wet drywall does not recover. Once the paper facing has been saturated it loses strength and can hold mould even after it dries.
So we cut back to sound material, check the framing and insulation behind, and let everything dry before new board goes in. Rushing that step traps moisture inside a finished wall.

Joint compound and ceiling texture from that era can contain asbestos. Cutting or sanding it without knowing is a genuine health risk, not a formality.
