Concrete slab installation in Ottawa has to account for frost, which is why the edge detail matters as much as the slab itself. Call (613) 261-4861 to scope your slab.

We pour slabs across the greater Ottawa area between late spring and early autumn, for garages, sheds, additions, hot tubs, generators and heat pump pads.

A slab that is thick enough but sitting on unprepared ground will still crack and settle. Base and edge support are where the durability comes from.

Frost, edges and thickened footings

A slab on grade in this climate needs its perimeter protected from frost, either with a thickened edge and footing below frost depth or with insulation designed for the purpose.

Without that, the edges lift each winter and the slab cracks around the perimeter. Garage slabs are especially exposed because the door opening lets cold straight in at the edge.

For heated spaces such as an addition, the slab also needs a vapour barrier and insulation underneath, or you get a cold floor and condensation problems.

Getting loads and finishes right

A garage slab carrying vehicles is a different design from a shed base, and an equipment pad for a hot tub or a generator has its own load and vibration considerations.

We size thickness and reinforcement for the actual load rather than pouring everything the same, and we plan the drainage so water leaves the slab rather than sitting on it.

For garage floors we usually recommend a lightly textured finish, since a smooth troweled surface becomes slippery once snow and salt melt off a car.

Slabs for heat pumps and generators

Heat pumps are now common in Ottawa, and outdoor units need a level, stable pad clear of snow drift and roof runoff, with clearance for airflow and service access.

Getting that pad in the right spot matters. A unit set where snow slides off the roof onto it, or where a downspout discharges, causes service problems every winter.

What a concrete slab quote includes

  • Use and load: what the slab has to carry, stated.
  • Excavation and base: depth, granular thickness and compaction.
  • Edge detail: thickened edge, footing or frost insulation.
  • Reinforcement: mesh, rebar or fibre as appropriate.
  • Vapour barrier and insulation: where the slab is under heated space.
  • Finish and drainage: surface texture and where water goes.

Where concrete slab installation sits in the bigger job

This work is part of our general contractor service, so it can run on its own or as one stage inside a larger project. When it is part of a bigger renovation we sequence it with the other trades rather than treating it as a standalone visit.

Clients booking this often pair it with roof repair, roof replacement, new roof installation or brick repair. One contract covers whichever combination you need, with a single schedule and one point of contact.

Concrete Slab Installation Ottawa FAQ

Does a garage slab need footings?

The perimeter needs frost protection, usually a thickened edge with a footing below frost depth, or engineered frost protected insulation. Without it the edges heave and crack.

Do I need a permit for a concrete slab in Ottawa?

A slab for a new structure generally forms part of that structure permit. A simple pad for equipment often does not need one. We confirm what applies before starting and call locates before any digging.

Can you pour a slab in the fall?

Up to a point. Concrete needs above freezing conditions to cure, so late season pours need protection and sometimes heated blankets. Past a certain date we recommend waiting for spring rather than risking the cure.

Why is my existing garage floor cracked and flaking?

Flaking at the surface usually means the mix was not air entrained, or salt got onto young concrete. Cracking often points to base or edge frost issues. We assess which it is before recommending resurfacing or replacement.
